Does the Qur’an say that Jesus died?

Most Muslims believe that Jesus didn’t die, but was taken to heaven immediately according to Qur’an 4:158. However, we may ask it is in agreement with other Qur’an verses.

All people die

All human beings pass away. Jesus, the Messiah was all his life a human being on earth under the laws of biology: “He said, ‘Therein you will live, and therein you will die, and from it you will be brought forth’” (Qur’an 7:25) and “Have We not made the earth a container of the living and the dead?” (Qur’an 77:25-26). Because all people will see death, also Jesus died.

All prophets die

There is a verse in the Qur’an that claims that all messengers before Muhammad died: “Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him” (Qur’an 3:144). In Arab, the words الرُّسُلُ ۚ (illā rasūlun) means "the messengers". Jesus is according to the Qur’an also a messenger (Qur’an 5:75), so also Jesus died.

Jesus died

The Qur’an mentions that Jesus died: “And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive." (Qur’an 19:33). This verse has the words “the day I will die”. This means that Jesus died. “And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive” (Qur’an 19:31). The Qur’an says in this verse that Jesus will pray and give alms until he dies. That means Jesus died. A dead body is not able to pray or to give money.

Logical context within the Qur’an

The Qur’an supports the resurrection, which implies everyone has to die as Qur’an 20:55 says: “From the earth We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will extract you another time”. Jesus is like any human being under the natural laws of this world, therefore he died.

Conclusion

Qur’an says in many places that Jesus died. Those who believe that Jesus never died should consider above mentioned Qur’an verses.

Qur'an 4:157: Did Jesus die on the cross?

Qur'an 2:87 and 5:70: Was Jesus Christ killed?
