Qur'an 3:45: Does Jesus have a divine title?

Jesus has several titles in the Qur'an, such as prophet and messenger. We will study his unique titles "Word of God" and "Spirit of God" to get a better view about the position of Jesus.

Word of God

In Qur’an 3:45 we find a high doctrine concerning Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is called "Word of God". The title "Word of God" is exclusively used for Jesus Christ, because Jesus Christ is called "Word of God" in the Gospel, where the Word of God is itself God, confirming the Greek Logos doctrine [1].

Before the time of Muhammad, there is only one historical person who has been given the title “Word of God”, in Greek: λόγος (logos) and that is Jesus Christ as written in the Gospel:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:1, 14).

It cannot be denied that Muhammad wanted to be recognized as a prophet by the Christians. When he saw that they did not want to recognize him immediately, he tried to come with texts that should sound familiar to Christians, in such a way that they should accept Muhammad as a prophet. Therefore we find the following verses in the Qur’an:

“Behold! the angels said: "O Mary! Allah giveth thee glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah." (Qur’an 3:45).

Christ Jesus the son of Mary was a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him (Qur’an 4:171).

Spirit of God

“Then will Allah say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Recount My favor to thee and to thy mother. Behold! I strengthened thee with the Holy Spirit, so that thou didst speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. Behold! I taught thee the Book and Wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel. And behold! thou makest out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My leave, and thou breathest into it and it becometh a bird by My leave, and thou healest those born blind, and the lepers, by My leave. And behold! thou bringest forth the dead by My leave. And behold! I did restrain the Children of Israel from (violence to) thee when thou didst show them the Clear Signs, and the unbelievers among them said: ’This is nothing but evident magic.’” (Qur’an 5:110).

Consequences of the titles of Jesus

We draw from Qur’an 3:45, 4:171 and 5:110 the conclusion:

(1). Jesus the Messiah is Word and Spirit of God

Every prophet has a relation to the Word of God. Note that God would have hidden forever, when there were no prophets and there was no relation of the prophets with the Word of God. The prophets gave guidance to mankind. Therefore we can conclude:

(2). The Word of God is God.

Now we may conclude from (1) and (2):

(3). Jesus Christ is God

When you deny this, then you would not understand the nature of God. When Jesus Christ is outside God, then he is without the Word and Spirit of God. When you want to deny that Jesus Christ is God, you have to accept that the Word and Spirit are split off from God. But then you (as a Muslim) have made associates to God! Contradiction!

No one else in the Quran has the titles "Word of God" and "Spirit of God" in the Qur'an. Therefore it is possible to conclude that Jesus the Messiah is God.

Somehow, I came across your website. I had to smile a little, because there are some bad things in these texts. Why are you reciting the Qur´an? If you believe in the scriptures of the Qur´an, then you also believe in the message of the Last Prophet (pbuh).

Your question reminds me about a Jewish man, who met Jesus. He asked: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus has sympathy and compassion for you as a Muslims when you have moral practices. Jesus said: “One thing you lack”. Jesus Christ is the Word of God, while the prophets are just shadows of the Word of God. Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior. Only the righteous Jesus Christ is the final sacrifice for sin. You can make the decision to start a new life by following Jesus Christ: “Then come, follow me.” (Mark 10:21). Being sure about going to heaven is only possible by faith in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
