Qur'an 24:35: Is Jesus Christ the Light?

One of the Biblical names of Jesus is "The Light". Since the Qur'an has many descriptions about Jesus, examination can be done to recognize if Jesus is "The Light" in the Qur'an. One description of "The Light" is:

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.” (Qur’an 24:35). Evaluation will be done if there is a relation with Jesus Christ in the Bible.

Islamic explanation of the verse

According to traditional Muslim explanation, the verse is a warning to all believers to put focus on the Supreme Being. There were hypocrites with weak faith and they needed motivation to seek God first. The words have a metaphorical explanation and it will be difficult to miss the true meaning. "The Light" is like physical light rays that come to the eye. It is God' Word, which is not limited, but connected with the absolute truth. Everything which gives light and illuminates other things has received its light from God.

Although Allah’s Light is capable to illuminate the whole world, not everyone is able to receive it. Only the Supreme Being will bless the one to receive His Light. People may see the light of the sun, moon, stars and lights made by human beings, but not the Light of God.

Biblical explanation of the verse

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.” (Qur’an 24:35).

The Qur’an confirms the Hebrew Scripture. In the book of Psalms we read:

“The LORD is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).

The light is connected in the book of Psalms with the word: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105). The Word of God enlightens every man that comes into the world; nor merely in a temporal sense, of giving him the light of prosperity, and delivering him from the darkness of adversity; but of the light of grace communicated to him by him who is the sun of righteousness, and the light of the world; and by whom such who are darkness itself, while in an unregenerate state, are made light, and see light. The Qur’an confirms that the Word of God is Jesus Christ (Qur’an 3:45). In the Gospel is explained that Jesus Christ is the light: “In him was life, and that life was the light of men.” (John 1:4).

This means that all the light which is given to men at first conversion is from Jesus Christ, the Word of God. All the after communications and increase of it are from Jesus Christ; as well as all that spiritual joy, peace, and comfort they partake of, which light sometimes signifies, as written in the book of Psalms: “Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart.” (Psalm 97:11).

The Lord, who is the believer’s light, is the strength of his life; not only by whom, but in whom he lives and moves. In God let us strengthen ourselves. The gracious presence of Jesus Christ, the Word of God is in the hearts of his people. Therefore Jesus said:

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12).

Conclusion

There is hidden knowledge in the Qur'an about deeper meaning of spiritual life. The Bible is able to explain the deeper details about spiritual life and shows practices how to receive benefits for mankind.
